Keyword and SEO Planning for Activewear Category Pages
Activewear category pages are usually named after internal merchandising language, and internal language is almost never what customers search. A page called Studio Collection captures no demand; a page called Medium Impact Sports Bras does. The fix is not complicated, but it has to happen before the site structure is locked, because renaming category URLs later costs you the authority those pages have already accumulated.
Group keywords by intent
Build four groups. Product type: sports bra, racerback sports bra, medium impact bra. Activity: cycling bra, rowing workout top, dance fitness bra. Feature: cut-out back bra, adjustable band sports bra, removable pad bra. Problem: bra straps keep slipping, sports bra for large bust, breathable workout bra. The first two groups belong on category and product pages; the last two belong in guides and blog content that link back to them.
Map terms to specific page elements
One primary term per page, placed in the page title, the main heading and the first hundred words of body copy. Secondary terms go into subheadings, image alt text and the body. Alt text is routinely skipped on apparel sites and it is free: describe the garment and the design detail, not the file name. Keep the URL short, hyphenated and derived from the primary term.
Prevent cannibalization
The most common self-inflicted problem is three pages targeting the same term: a category page, a collection page and a blog post. Search engines then split signals between them and none ranks. Assign each term to exactly one page, and let the others link to it. If you genuinely need a separate page for a size or activity variant, differentiate it with a term the customer actually uses, such as plus size or cycling, rather than duplicating the parent.
Build pages that deserve to rank
A category page with sixteen product tiles and no copy competes poorly against one that answers the question behind the search. Add a short buying guide above or below the grid: how to choose an impact level, what a racerback does for strap stability, how to measure band and cup size, how to wash and dry the garment. Two or three hundred words of genuinely useful text on each category page outperforms a separate content hub nobody links to.
Measure the right things
Watch impressions and average position per page, not just sessions. A page with rising impressions and a position just outside the top results is one round of copy and internal linking away from traffic; a page with no impressions has a targeting problem instead. Review the keyword-to-page assignment every quarter, because the terms customers use shift faster than most merchandising calendars do.
