Support Measurement: How to Quantify Bounce Reduction

Source:News / Time:2026-09-21

Support is the single most used word in sports bra marketing and the least measured property in sports bra sourcing. Buyers approve a sample because it feels firm in the hand, then discover in the returns data that the range is inconsistent across sizes. There is no ISO or ASTM standard that defines a support number, which means the buyer has to define the method, the protocol and the acceptance limit. That is not as hard as it sounds, and it is the only way to compare two suppliers or two seasons honestly.

What to Measure

Breast movement during exercise is three-dimensional: vertical, medio-lateral and anterior-posterior. Vertical displacement is the largest and the easiest to capture, but horizontal motion correlates strongly with discomfort, so record both. The useful outputs are peak-to-peak displacement in millimeters, peak velocity, and the percentage reduction against a defined baseline condition. Absolute displacement is meaningless without stating the movement, the cadence and the cup size of the subject, so those three must be written into the protocol.

Methods Available to Buyers

Research-grade work uses marker-based three-dimensional motion capture with markers on the sternum and on the breast, sampling at 100 Hz or higher, then computes breast displacement relative to the torso frame. That is accurate and expensive. A practical alternative for commercial development is a wearable accelerometer or IMU mounted at the cup apex, sampling at 50 to 100 Hz, which gives a repeatable relative index rather than an absolute displacement. A third option, and the cheapest, is a standardized vertical jump or step test with high-speed video at 120 frames per second or more and a scale reference in frame, analysed frame by frame.

A Repeatable Protocol

Whatever the equipment, standardize the movement. For a medium impact programme, use a controlled elliptical at 60 strides per minute and a two-footed jump sequence at a metronome rate, with each condition run for 30 seconds of steady state after a warm-up and repeated three times. Use the same subjects across all samples being compared, and test on the same day where possible, because hydration and cycle phase affect breast tissue. Report the mean and the range across subjects, not a single best result.

Setting an Acceptance Limit

Define the baseline as the unsupported condition or, more practically, as a reference bra already in your range. Then state the requirement in relative terms: for medium impact, vertical displacement should be reduced to 40 percent or less of the unsupported value, and for high impact to 30 percent or less, measured at the same cadence and on the same subjects. Horizontal displacement is often larger relative to baseline than vertical, so track it separately. Set a consistency requirement too: across the size run, the reduction figure should not vary by more than 10 percentage points, because that variance is what customers experience as inconsistent sizing.

Why Structure Drives the Number

Displacement is controlled by the load path, not by how tight the bra feels. The underband is designed to carry the majority of the load, which is why band circumference tolerance and elastic modulus matter more than cup fabric. The racerback geometry holds the straps in a fixed position relative to the shoulder, removing the outward migration that a straight strap allows under repetitive arm motion. The back cut-out is placed to avoid the shoulder blades so that the support structure is not interrupted where the body hinges, and the three-row hook closure lets the wearer reset the band tension as the garment ages. Test each of these as a variable: change one, re-measure.

Recording and Using the Data

Build a small support library: for each style, the protocol, the subject profile, the displacement figures and the reduction percentage. It becomes the benchmark for the next development and the evidence base when a cheaper supplier claims equivalent performance. Support stops being an adjective when there is a number behind it.
