Fit Testing on Live Models vs Dress Forms

Source:News / Time:2026-09-21

A medium impact bra that measures perfectly on a form can still fail in a spin class. The opposite is also true: a fit session with one enthusiastic model produces enthusiastic opinions and no data that a factory can act on. Buyers who get consistent bulk fit use both tools, for different jobs, with a written protocol and a scoring sheet. Everything else is a matter of taste, and taste does not survive a change of factory or a change of season.

What Dress Forms Are Good For

A dress form gives a repeatable, dimensionally stable reference. It is the right tool for checking static measurements: underband circumference at each hook row, strap length, cup depth, armhole and neck drop, and the geometry of the back cut-out. Use it to verify grading, too, by measuring the same points across the full size run and checking that each grade step is consistent. Body measurement conventions are published as ISO 8559-1 and the standard US figure tables such as ASTM D5585 give a starting point for selecting a form size. Forms cannot tell you anything about movement, pressure or comfort, and they will happily accept a bra that the wearer rejects in five minutes.

What Live Models Add

Only a live body produces the failure modes that generate returns: strap migration off the shoulder, band ride-up during repetitive arm motion, pressure concentration at the racerback junction, and the movement of the cup relative to the body. For a medium impact programme covering elliptical, rowing, cycling and dance, run a movement protocol rather than a mirror check. A workable sequence is 20 minutes on an elliptical at a fixed cadence, 500 rowing strokes, 30 minutes on a spin bike, and a dance jump sequence of three minutes. Record strap displacement in millimeters at the shoulder, band rise at the centre front, and any pad rotation, at set intervals.

Choosing and Documenting Fit Models

Do not use one model per style. For a B/C cup programme, book three models per core size: one at the low end, one at the middle and one at the high end of the size range the garment is graded to cover. Record full body measurements against ISO 8559-1 definitions before the session, including underbust, overbust, chest, shoulder slope and torso length, and keep those records with the style file. A fit approval signed off against an undocumented model is worthless six months later when the body is no longer available.

Making the Result Objective

Convert opinion into numbers with a fit score sheet. Suggested items, each scored 1 to 5: band stays level during motion, straps remain in place, no gaping at the cup edge, no pressure marks after 30 minutes, cut-out edges do not roll, hook row used matches the expected row, and pad stays flat. Add simple pressure mapping or a pressure indicating film at the shoulder to compare strap load between samples, and record video from front and back for the archive. Any score below 3 on a support item is a reject, regardless of how the bra looks.

Running Both in the Right Order

Use the form first to catch gross dimensional errors so you do not waste model time on a garment that is simply the wrong size. Then run the live session. Then put the approved sample back on the form and record the measurements of the approved garment itself; those numbers, not the pattern, become the bulk reference. This closes the loop between what the model felt and what the factory can measure.

Turning Fit Approval Into a Control Document

Issue a fit report with the model measurements, the score sheet, the approved garment measurements per size, front and back photographs and the movement video reference. Number it as a revision and require the factory to match revision numbers on the pre-production sample. When a bulk sample measures differently from the approved garment by more than tolerance, the fit report is the document that settles the argument.
