Sewing Stretch Fabrics: Needles, Feed and Thread Selection
Stretch knits punish the wrong needle, feed setting or thread with skipped stitches, holes and seams that snap in wear.
This guide explains the underlying principle, the numbers that matter and the checks that keep results consistent.

Needle selection
Ballpoint or medium ballpoint needles part the knit structure instead of cutting filaments and elastane.
For most programmes the decision is taken during development, when changing the specification still costs nothing more than one sampling round.
Feed and differential control
Differential feed prevents stretched or puckered seams when feeding elastic fabrics through the machine.
Where a standard exists, name the standard number, since a value without a method cannot be verified by a third party.
- Request test reports on production fabric, not on development samples
- Verify the sampling plan and the number of specimens
- Store reports with roll or lot identification for traceability
Thread specification
Textured polyester or core-spun thread provides the elongation a stretch seam requires.
Include the parameter in the pre-production meeting so the whole team understands what will be checked.
Stitch types for stretch
Overlock, flatlock and coverstitch each suit different seams, and the stitch density must match fabric recovery.
Track results over several seasons, because a slow drift is easier to correct than a sudden failure.
- Agree tolerances in writing before the first sample is made
- Define the measurement condition and the direction measured
- Review the limit each season against real performance data
Defect prevention
Skipped stitches, needle holes and seam grin are usually solved by re-specifying needles and thread tension.
Compare quotations on the same specification, otherwise the cheapest offer usually reflects a lower requirement.
Summary
The technical content is straightforward. The discipline lies in writing it down, testing it on production fabric and repeating the result on the next order.
