Compression Wear Fabrics: Engineering Graduated Support

Source:News / Time:2026-09-12

Compression apparel sells on a measurable promise: a defined amount of pressure delivered to a defined part of the body. Delivering that promise consistently requires fabric engineering rather than simply knitting a tighter legging.

Pressure basics

Compression is measured in millimetres of mercury or in hectopascals. Medical graduated compression typically runs 15–20, 20–30 or 30–40 mmHg at the ankle, decreasing upward. Sports compression leggings and tops usually work in a much lower range, delivering support and proprioceptive feedback rather than medical benefit.

Laplace’s law in practice

The pressure a garment exerts depends on fabric tension, radius of the body part and the number of fabric layers. This is why a fabric that performs well on a thigh can feel excessive at the calf. Designers use panel splits, different stitch densities and zoned elastane to hold pressure within tolerance along the limb.

Fabric construction choices

  • High elastane content, typically 22–35%, with quality heat-stable yarn.
  • Double-knit or interlock structures for uniform pressure without distortion.
  • Power mesh for ventilation zones that must still hold shape.
  • Warp-knit constructions where very high and very consistent pressure is required.

Measurement and validation

  • Use a compression testing device or mannequin with calibrated sensors at defined points.
  • Test after five washes, because relaxation changes pressure noticeably.
  • Test on several sizes, since the same fabric behaves differently across a size range.
  • Record the body position, because pressure increases when a muscle contracts.

Comfort constraints

Compression garments fail commercially when they are uncomfortable at the waistband or the underarm. Grading rules, flatlock seam selection and a lower-pressure waistband construction are the usual solutions. Always fit-test on real athletes for at least an hour of activity before approving bulk.

Compression is one of the few categories where the specification can be verified to the millimetre. Taking advantage of that fact protects both the product claim and the customer relationship.
