DTC vs Wholesale Requirements for Sports Bra Programmes

Source:News / Time:2026-09-21

A garment that works for your own website can be rejected by a wholesale partner before it is even unpacked, and the reason is rarely the garment. Wholesale is a data and logistics business: if the carton label is wrong, the barcode does not scan, or the size ratio does not match the purchase order, the shipment fails at the distribution center and the chargeback lands with you. Direct-to-consumer has the opposite failure mode, where the product is fine and the photography is not.

Packaging and labeling diverge immediately

DTC wants a pack-out that survives a single-parcel journey and opens well: polybag or boxed, tissue, a care card, minimal plastic where your brand position calls for it. Wholesale wants carton-level accuracy: correct carton count, correct size and color ratio per carton, scannable barcodes on every unit, and labeling that matches the partner's specification exactly. Get that specification in writing before production, because it varies by retailer and it is expensive to fix after packing.

Data requirements are part of the product

Wholesale partners will ask for item master data: SKU structure, size and color codes, country of origin, fiber composition, care instructions, carton dimensions and weights, and often a compliance documentation pack. Build this once as a template and populate it per style. Programs that treat this as an afterthought lose weeks at onboarding, and some lose the account.

Assets are the DTC deliverable

For your own channel you need the image set, the copy, the size and fit guidance, and the wash care content, all produced to a consistent specification. This is a real line item in the program cost, and it is the one buyers most often under-budget. Factor in reshooting when a colorway is added mid-season, which is more common than anyone plans for.

Returns exposure sits in different places

In DTC you absorb the return cost directly: inbound shipping, inspection, repackaging, and the markdown on anything that cannot be resold as new. In wholesale, fit-related returns partly land with the retailer, but chargebacks for compliance failures land with you and are usually larger per incident. Fit accuracy is the lever that reduces both, which is why an adjustable closure on the underband is worth specifying: it gives a wider range of customers a wearable result on the first try.

Cash cycle differences

DTC ties up cash in inventory and in finished-goods photography before a unit sells. Wholesale ties up cash in inventory and then in receivables, with payment terms that can run well past delivery. If you are running both, model them separately, because mixing the two working-capital profiles in one forecast is how a profitable program runs out of cash.
