Removable Pad Systems in Sports Bras: Sourcing Considerations

Source:News / Time:2026-09-21

Removable pads look like a minor line item until the first wash. Then they twist, fold, migrate to the centre front or print a visible shape through the shell, and the garment comes back as defective even though nothing about it is technically broken. For B/C cup medium impact programmes in particular, the pad system deserves its own specification page rather than a one-line note under trims.

Pocket Geometry

Two constructions dominate production. The first is a full inner envelope: a lining panel sewn to the band and neckline to create a closed pocket, accessed through a small opening at the side seam or through a placket. The second uses partial slip pockets formed by an interior patch at the underbust. Envelopes control migration far better and are the safer choice for medium impact work; partial patches cost less but allow the pad to rotate during high-arm movement and to escape entirely during laundering.

Whichever route you take, specify the pocket opening width and require it to be narrower than the pad width by a stated amount. If the pad can get in easily, it can also get out.

Controlling Migration in Wear

Central migration during washing is the single most reported complaint. The countermeasures are mechanical rather than material: a short vertical tack stitch between shell and lining at the centre front, a pocket cut marginally smaller than the pad so the pad sits under light compression, or a perimeter silicone print. If you specify silicone, require wash-test evidence that it neither transfers to the shell nor delaminates.

Pad Material and Shape

Foam pads are usually polyurethane or polyester based. Specify density, thickness at the apex and at the edge, and whether the edge is skived to avoid a visible ledge under a fitted top. For dance and cycling channels a thinner, lower-profile pad generally reads better than a moulded dome. Confirm dimensional compatibility: if the pad shrinks more than its pocket under laundering, it buckles. Require AATCC 135 results for both components, not only for the shell fabric.

Colour is not cosmetic here. Dark pads against a light lining will bleed. Require colour fastness to washing and to perspiration under the relevant ISO 105 parts, with a rating of at least 4 written in as your acceptance criterion. Where the pad carries an antibacterial finish or print, documentation should meet OEKO-TEX Standard 100; where sizes fall into childrens categories, CPSIA requirements apply.

Sourcing and Cost

Pads are normally bought in from a specialist rather than produced in-house, so their lead time differs from fabric and often from other trims. Book them separately and record the supplier item number in the tech pack to prevent silent substitution. Cost per pad varies much more than buyers expect, so ask the factory to quote your chosen pad alongside the cheapest acceptable alternative. Then the decision is deliberate rather than discovered.

Approval Testing

Never approve a sample without laundering it with the pads in place. Run the intended care cycle at least five times, photograph pad position after each cycle, and define a maximum permitted displacement. That single step, which costs almost nothing, eliminates the majority of pad complaints before a bulk order is ever placed.
