Graphene Modified Yarn for Sports Bras: Odor-Free Case Study
A brand came to us with a familiar complaint: medium support sports bras that smelled stale after a single session, even straight out of the wash. We rebuilt the fabric around Graphene Modified Yarn and followed the style through two bulk seasons.
The complaint
The smell developed at the underband and the centre front panel, where sweat sits longest during gym work, running and studio practice. Earlier lots used a standard synthetic knit with no odour strategy, so the smell was baked into the garment within weeks. The sweat zone for medium support sports bras is the underband and the centre front panel, which is where the treatment has to sit.
Why the smell forms
Sweat itself is almost odourless. Bacteria on the fabric break down the fatty acids and proteins in it, and the by-products are what the wearer notices. Removing the smell therefore means either slowing the bacteria or removing the moisture they need. Every lot is measured against ISO 20743 plus far-infrared emissivity before the fabric is released for cutting.

Fabric solution
The new fabric uses Graphene Modified Yarn, which works because the platelets create a surface that bacteria colonise poorly while also spreading heat. We kept the base at bonded spacer and power mesh panels and 200-260 GSM with mesh zones so the hand and cover stayed exactly where the brand wanted them. Cost impact is a yarn premium of 12-18%, which is usually recovered through fewer returns across a season.
Test evidence
The finished fabric was checked against ISO 20743 plus far-infrared emissivity and reached bacterial reduction above 95% with far-infrared emissivity above 0.88. Durability was confirmed at permanent, because the additive sits inside the fibre, which is the point at which the odour-control value starts to fall. Wear trials were run under gym work, running and studio practice rather than in the laboratory alone.
What the brand saw
Returns mentioning smell dropped to almost nothing in the next season, and the style moved onto a fixed repeat recipe. Care wording now states standard home laundering without bleach so the value survives in the customer's laundry. The care label states standard home laundering without bleach, and that wording is the condition behind permanent, because the additive sits inside the fibre.
