Zinc-Based Deodorant Finish for Base Layers: Troubleshooting Guide
When long sleeve base layers still smells after an odour-control finish was specified, the cause is rarely the chemistry alone. Here is the order in which we investigate, using Zinc-Based Deodorant Finish as the example.
Confirm the finish is present
The first check is ISO 17299-2 deodorant test on bulk fabric. We have seen approved samples replaced in bulk with untreated goods, and no amount of reformulating fixes a finish that was never applied. The sweat zone for long sleeve base layers is the back and the underarm, which is where the treatment has to sit.
Check the sweat zone
If the treatment misses the back and the underarm, performance will disappoint even when laboratory results look good. For long sleeve base layers the treated surface has to sit where sweat lands first. Every lot is measured against ISO 17299-2 deodorant test before the fabric is released for cutting.

Look at the laundry routine
Fabric softener, low wash temperatures and drying while damp all leave residue that feeds bacteria. Correct care is wash at 30-40 degrees without fabric softener. Cost impact is USD 0.25-0.45 per garment, which is usually recovered through fewer returns across a season.
Check the rest of the recipe
Residual dye, softener or spin finish can neutralise an antibacterial system. zinc binds the fatty acids released in sweat before bacteria convert them into odour only works if nothing in the bath blocks the active agent, so we scour thoroughly before application. Wear trials were run under skiing, cycling and winter training rather than in the laboratory alone.
Reset the target
Once the above are settled, re-measure against more than 80% reduction of ammonia and acetic acid in the test gas at 20 home washes. If the value falls short, move to a higher add-on or a built-in yarn rather than repeating the same finish at the same level. The care label states wash at 30-40 degrees without fabric softener, and that wording is the condition behind 20 home washes.
