Softshell Water-Repellent Fabric Quality Control: The Defects That Cause Leaks and Delamination
The failures most often seen in softshell water-repellent fabric: delamination, pinholes, weak seam tape, wetting out and shade drift, with the checks that catch them before the container ships.

Checks that belong in every lot
Every production lot of softshell water-repellent fabric should be tested for hydrostatic head, bond strength and spray rating, with the results kept against the approved standard.
Testing only the first roll is a common shortcut, and it is the reason a defect sometimes appears halfway through a season's production.
Delamination and bubbling
Delamination comes from an incomplete bond, contamination on the film, wrong adhesive for the fibre, or polyurethane hydrolysis after long storage in heat and humidity.
A peel test on both new fabric and fabric that has been washed and flexed will show whether the bond will last, and storage conditions for softshell water-repellent fabric should be written into the purchase terms.
Pinholes and membrane damage
Tiny pinholes and film damage are invisible on the roll but obvious in the rain, and they usually come from handling, needle damage or excessive heat during lamination.
Inspection under light, plus a hydrostatic head check on cut panels rather than only on a flat swatch, catches most of these before cutting.
Seam sealing and tape failures
Seam tape that lifts, creeps or is applied off-centre is the most common cause of a leaking garment, and the cause is almost always wrong temperature, pressure or speed at the machine.
Set the parameters with the tape maker for the specific softshell water-repellent fabric, record them, and check tape adhesion by peel test on the actual seam rather than on a flat bond.
Wetting out, shade drift and paperwork
A finish that fails early, shade variation between rolls and short or damaged packing are the complaints that arrive after delivery, when they are most expensive.
Keep the approved sample, the test report and the inspection record together, because a claim supported by evidence is settled quickly and one supported by memory is not.
Summary
The technical side of waterproof fabric is well understood. The discipline lies in writing the specification down, testing against it and keeping the evidence.
