Softshell Water-Repellent Fabric Explained: How Waterproof Breathable Construction Works

A clear explanation of how softshell water-repellent fabric keeps rain out and lets sweat out: the face fabric, the membrane or coating, the backer and what each layer contributes on the hill.

Softshell Water-Repellent Fabric Explained: How Waterproof Breathable Construction Works

The face fabric and its finish

The outer layer of softshell water-repellent fabric carries the abrasion load and sheds the first water, and it is the durable water repellent finish on this surface that stops the fabric wetting out.

Once the face fabric wets out, the fabric feels cold and clammy and breathability drops, which is why the finish matters as much as the membrane beneath it.

The membrane or coating

Waterproofness in softshell water-repellent fabric comes from the barrier layer: either a microporous film whose pores are far smaller than a raindrop but larger than a water vapour molecule, or a non-porous film that transports moisture by diffusion.

The difference is practical rather than academic, because a microporous film loses performance when contaminated, while a non-porous film moves vapour more slowly in very cold conditions.

The backer and the laminate bond

The inner layer protects the barrier from body oils and abrasion, and in softshell water-repellent fabric the quality of the adhesive bond between layers determines whether the fabric delaminates in year two or year eight.

Bond strength is measured by a peel test, and a laminate that passes comfortably when new is the single best predictor of a garment surviving repeated washing.

What waterproof breathable really means

Waterproofness is a pressure measurement, breathability is a vapour transfer measurement, and softshell water-repellent fabric is always a compromise between the two plus weight, stretch and durability.

Typical targets read as water resistance rather than full waterproofness, RET around 4-10, at roughly 250-350 gsm, and a specification that asks for all extremes at once usually ends up as a fabric nobody can produce.

Reading the specification sheet

Ask for the test method next to every figure, because a hydrostatic head result without the standard behind it means very little.

For softshell water-repellent fabric, a complete sheet lists construction, weight, width, hydrostatic head with method, breathability with method, spray rating, wash durability, bond strength and care limits.

Summary

The technical side of waterproof fabric is well understood. The discipline lies in writing the specification down, testing against it and keeping the evidence.
