Sun Protection Fabric: UPF 50+ Testing Standards and Construction Tips

Source:News / Time:2026-09-12

Sun-protection apparel has grown from a niche outdoor category into a mainstream summer range, and UPF has become a claim that regulators and consumers both scrutinise. Understanding the test method is essential to making a claim that holds.

What UPF means

UPF, the ultraviolet protection factor, compares the UV radiation reaching the skin with and without fabric. A UPF of 50 means the fabric transmits no more than one fiftieth of the UV radiation. Labels commonly show UPF 15/20, 25/30 and 50+, following the AS/NZS 4399, EN 13758-1 or AATCC 183 test methods.

What determines UPF

  • Fibre – polyester and nylon absorb UV better than cotton and viscose; undyed cellulose fabrics are the weakest.
  • Cover factor – tighter stitch density or higher yarn density blocks more radiation.
  • Colour – deeper shades and dyes that absorb in the UV spectrum raise UPF.
  • Additives – ceramic or titanium dioxide delustrants and UV absorbers improve protection permanently.
  • Stretch – elongation opens the structure and lowers UPF, so test the fabric at 20% extension for stretch garments.
  • Moisture – wet fabric usually transmits less UV but some constructions behave unpredictably; test both states.

Construction guidance for UPF 50+

  • Choose polyester or nylon/spandex instead of pure cellulose blends.
  • Aim for 150–200 GSM with a dense knit or a tight plain weave.
  • Prefer darker or saturated colours for the protective panels.
  • Avoid open mesh in high-exposure zones unless the base layer is also protective.
  • Keep the elastane content moderate, since high stretch reduces cover at the shoulders.

Care and durability

Fibre-intrinsic protection survives laundering, but topical UV finishes gradually wash out. Up to 20–30% of protection can be lost over repeated washing and abrasion with a surface finish only. Recommend a gentle wash and warn against fabric softener, which can reduce the effect of additives.

Documenting the claim

Keep the test report from an accredited laboratory, state the standard used, and record whether the result was measured dry, wet, stretched or after laundering. A claim supported by a clearly scoped report survives both retail audits and consumer scrutiny far better than a nominal figure.
