GSM, Denier and Fabric Weight: A Complete Buyer's Guide

Source:News / Time:2026-09-12

Most disputes between brands and mills over fabric quality start with a unit that was never precisely defined. GSM, denier and yarn count describe different things, and a specification that mixes them without tolerances invites argument later.

GSM: grams per square metre

GSM is the mass of one square metre of fabric. It is the single most quoted figure in activewear because it correlates with opacity, hand feel and warmth. Practical market bands:

  • 90–140 GSM – lightweight mesh, linings, sun-protection shells.
  • 140–200 GSM – summer tops, single jerseys.
  • 200–260 GSM – yoga tops, sports bras, mid-weight bottoms.
  • 260–320 GSM – leggings, joggers, structured knitwear.
  • 320–420 GSM – winter brushed fabrics and outerwear.

Standard tolerance is ±5% measured in the conditioned state. Ask which state the mill quotes – greige, after dyeing, or after heat setting – because relaxation shrinkage during finishing can change GSM by 5–8%.

Denier: weight of the filament

Denier is the mass in grams of 9,000 metres of filament yarn. It describes yarn fineness, not fabric weight. Common values in activewear are 40D, 50D, 70D, 75D and 100D for the main yarn, and 20D, 30D or 40D for elastane. Lower denier yields a smoother, softer surface; higher denier gives opacity and durability.

Count systems for spun yarns

  • Ne (English cotton count) – higher number equals finer yarn. Common in cotton blends.
  • Nm (metric count) – metres per gram, also higher equals finer.
  • Tex – grams per 1,000 metres, so higher equals coarser.

Writing a specification that holds up

  • State fibre content with tolerance, for example 82% nylon 18% spandex ±2%.
  • State yarn deniers for main and elastane yarns separately.
  • State GSM with the measurement state and the tolerance.
  • State the width and the acceptable crimp or edge trim.
  • State the shrinkage limit after three home launderings, typically ±5%.

A complete specification prevents most sampling iterations and gives the quality team a document to inspect against, which is ultimately the cheapest form of protection for both sides.
