Solstice Athletics Switzerland: Ski and Snowboard Base Layers Wash Durability Evaluation

Source:Customer Cases / Time:2026-09-16

Solstice Athletics is a Switzerland-based brand whose ski and snowboard base layers is one of its most demanding programmes. Durability is where most functional claims fail. We washed the compression warp knit fifty times under domestic conditions and re-measured after every ten cycles for Solstice Athletics.

Evaluation background

The programme covers base layer tops, leggings and neck gaiters, used for long days on the mountain. The environment is cold air with high exertion and sudden stops and the requirement written into the brief was warmth without bulk and no clamminess on the lift. Fabric was selected on that basis rather than on price alone.

Method

Washing ran at 30 degrees with a standard reference detergent and no softener, then tumble dried on low. This mirrors what customers actually do rather than what a care label optimistically suggests.

Performance by cycle

The fabric started at recovery above 92% after repeated extension and held above 90% of that value through 30 cycles. The decline after cycle 40 was gradual, which is the behaviour we want: a slow change, not a sudden failure.

Appearance

Pilling stayed at grade 4 or above and there was no visible shade shift against the retained reference. Surface comfort after washing mattered most to Solstice Athletics, so hand was scored by a panel at every interval.

Conclusion on service life

On this evidence the garment keeps its function for a full retail season of weekly washing, and ASTM D2594 remains a valid claim for that period.

Verdict and recommendation

Fifty cycles is a reasonable service life for this product class, and the compression warp knit stayed inside tolerance throughout. Care wording should be printed exactly as tested. For Solstice Athletics the practical next steps are to keep the current specification for the repeat, retain the shade standard, and issue ASTM D2594 results with every lot so any claim can be supported with data.
